We will be returning to the Santa Fe Complex (Website http://sfcomplex.org/) for Swarmfest 2011, to take place from Sunday June 26 to Tuesday June 28, 2011. Swarmfest is the annual meeting of the Swarm Development Group, and represents an opportunity for individuals engaged in agent-based modeling and complex systems analysis to present their work and engage in lively discussions with others with diverse, but similar, interests. We encourage the presentation of domain-specific models (a non-comprehensive list includes: ecology, social science, biomedicine, politics, political science and economics), more general practical and theoretical issues associated with agent-based modeling (a non-comprehensive list includes: methods, toolkits, computing platforms and means of analysis) and more general issues associated with investigating “complex systems” (you can define “complexity” you wish and we can all fight about it!). Swarmfest has traditionally had a workshop atmosphere where discussion and interactions are greatly encouraged, and as a result has been a very nice opportunity to “pre-release” preliminary research, present research-in-evolution to achieve feedback, and serve as a sounding board for all those “out-there” ideas that you don’t feel comfortable disclosing in your traditional scientific/professional societies.

The deadline for abstract submission is May 18, 2011. Abstracts for presentations should be one-page (8” x 11”) .pdf or .doc(x) files. Please send your submissions to Swarmfest2011@gmail.com. Notification of acceptance will be provided by May 10, 2011.

We returned to the Santa Fe Complex (Website http://sfcomplex.org/ ) on June 26 and 27, 2011 for a spirited and successful Swarmfest 2011.  Topics covered included: applications of agent-based modeling to education, biomedical research, economics and social science, discussions concerning the use of the terms "emergence" and "complexity," and an update on current and future work on SLAPP (Swarm-like Agent Protocols in Python); a toolkit derived from the original Swarm with ongoing and active development. We also had the opportunity to hear from 3 of the teams that participated in the 2010 New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge (see  http://challenge.nm.org ). Visit the [[Swarmfest 2011 Page]] speakers, titles and abstracts. We hope to be posting presentations in the near future as well.

For information on Program Details, Abstract Submission, Registration, Housing and Social Program see the conference page at [[Swarmfest 2011 Page]]. Hope to see you in New Mexico in June!

We returned to our roots in Santa Fe at the Santa Fe Complex (Website http://sfcomplex.org/ ) from Sunday, June 20 to Tuesday, June 22, 2010.  Topics covered included: domain specific applications of Agent-based modeling, ABM toolkit development, optimization and analysis of ABMs, and implementation of ABMs on high-performance computing platforms. Visit the [[Swarmfest 2010 Page]] speakers, titles and abstracts. We hope to be posting presentations in the near future as well.

Call for Mentors for the 2010-2011 New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge

For the past two years Swarmfest has served as a venue for participants of the New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge (SCC) to present their work, receive feedback and interact with active researchers using agent based modeling. The SCC is a program committed to teaching teams of middle and high schools students how to use powerful computers to analyze, model and solve world problems. For more information please see http://challenge.nm.org . Agent based modeling has increasingly been used in SCC projects, with two of the top projects from the last two years utilizing agent based modeling. For details of these projects check out "To Kill a Flocking Bird " - http://challenge.nm.org/archive/09-10/finalreports/70.pdf and "Control and Spread of Wildfires" - http://challenge.nm.org/archive/09-10/finalreports/99.pdf . Mentoring can be accomplished online; those interested in more information should go to "The Role of a Challenge Mentor" http://challenge.nm.org/resources/role.shtml and "Questions to discuss with a team" http://challenge.nm.org/resources/tpd.html , or contact consult@challenge.nm.org for more information. We believe that this is an excellent opportunity to "get them while they are young" and provide an introduction into an exciting and growing area of computational research.

SDG Google Summer of Code students and Projects from 2008

Swarm Development Group were assigned two students by Google's Summer of Code program, Haruka Matsuzaki and Pavel Vinogradov. Pavel is investigated ways to describe models using ontologies and Haruka looked at ways to control simulations by wire using a web browser, and probably using XML-RPC. Pavel has contributed a wiki page on 2008 Summer of Code which you can find here.

Swarm for Ubuntu and Debian Linux

Jakson Aquino produced detailed instructions for making Swarm from source on Ubuntu/Debian Linux, and some binaries for Ubuntu 7.04. Thank you Jakson!

Be a Swarm Development Group Member!

Membership in SDG is a way to support our efforts to maintain and improve Swarm, and to support agent-based modeling. We just updated our membership page with new membership categories and procedures. Take a look to see what you can do.

Agent- and Individual-based Modeling Resources

  • Resources for agent-based modeling. This is a new area of the wiki for information on agent-based modeling in general. There are sub-areas for:
    • Agent-based modeling community resources, including SwarmFest, our annual modeling conference
    • Software (information on alternative platforms; learning materials; template models; integrated development environments)
    • "How and why to do agent-based modeling": techniques and theory
    • Resources specific to different scientific domains
  • modelling@swarm.org: The email community of agent-based modelers. This email list discusses topics of general interest to agent-based modelers. More information and signup here.
