SDG to mentor two Google Summer of Code students in 2008
Swarm Development Group has again been accepted for Google's Summer of Code program, which pays student programmers to work on open-source projects. Please spread the word to any interested students. Our list of potential projects and guidelines for application are here. --SFRailsback 12:56, 21 Mar 2008 (EDT)

Swarm Development Group has been assigned two students by Google's Summer of Code program. Please welcome Haruka Matsuzaki and Pavel Vinogradov. Pavel is investigating ways to describe models using ontologies and Haruka is looking at ways to control simulations by wire using a web browser, and probably using XML-RPC. Pavel has already contributed a wiki page on 2008 Summer of Code which you can find here. --SFRailsback 20:31, 22 Apr 2008 (EDT)

SwarmFest 2008 registration is open!

SwarmFest 2008 will be our 12th annual conference of agent-based modelers and platform developers and users. This year our host is Dr. Gary An of Northwestern University's hospital in Chicago, and the meeting is 11-13 May. SwarmFest 2008 will have two special focus themes: high-performance computing and systems biology applications.

See our SwarmFest 2008 page for complete information on the conference themes, venue, registration, housing, abstract submittal, deadlines, etc. And you can visit our archive page for SwarmFest 2007 to see what happened last year at SwarmFest.

SDG to mentor two Google Summer of Code students in 2008

Swarm Development Group has been assigned two students by Google's Summer of Code program. Please welcome Haruka Matsuzaki and Pavel Vinogradov. Pavel is investigating ways to describe models using ontologies and Haruka is looking at ways to control simulations by wire using a web browser, and probably using XML-RPC. Pavel has already contributed a wiki page on 2008 Summer of Code which you can find here.

New SDG directors

Swarm Development Group recently added two new members to their board of directors. Gary An is physician on the faculty of Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and pioneer of agent-based modeling in medicine. John Pepper is a professor in the University of Arizona's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and member of the Santa Fe Institute's external faculty. Information on the board and its officers is here.

Swarm for Ubuntu and Debian Linux

Jakson Aquino produced detailed instructions for making Swarm from source on Ubuntu/Debian Linux, and some binaries for Ubuntu 7.04. Thank you Jakson!

Be a Swarm Development Group Member!

Membership in SDG is a way to support our efforts to maintain and improve Swarm, and to support agent-based modeling. We just updated our membership page with new membership categories and procedures. Take a look to see what you can do.

Agent- and Individual-based Modeling Resources

  • Resources for agent-based modeling. This is a new area of the wiki for information on agent-based modeling in general. There are sub-areas for:
    • Agent-based modeling community resources, including SwarmFest, our annual modeling conference
    • Software (information on alternative platforms; learning materials; template models; integrated development environments)
    • "How and why to do agent-based modeling": techniques and theory
    • Resources specific to different scientific domains
  • modelling@swarm.org: The email community of agent-based modelers. This email list discusses topics of general interest to agent-based modelers. More information and signup here.
